NFL: A few words for Roger Goodell

By Jacob Emert, sports staff writer

It was said when they started missing calls, it would stop – it didn’t. They said when they started blowing games, it would have to end – it hasn’t.

We have heard a lot about the atrocious jobs the replacement NFL referees have done over the past three weeks of competitive, regular season, football but last night it reached a new point.

If you do not know to which I am referring, watch the following link – for attempting to describe the debacle would be acrimonious.

The best part of the whole situation is the immediate social media blow up that you knew would follow, and did. Players, coaches, analysts, fans, and those weird people who create a fake twitter account trying to impersonate someone famous – @Frank_Gore I’m looking at you – all have a consensus opinion on what went on in the final play in Seattle, and we all know how truly rare that is in sports.

The refs blew it. They missed an easy call on the field, were fortunate enough to live in a generation where they have video replay to overturn their mistakes, went to the video, and came back with the same wrong call.

That’s like going back in time to tell Bill Buckner to close his legs, stopping to grab a ballpark frank, and missing your opportunity. Wrong us once? Ok. They are humans, it happens. Be given an opportunity to make up for your mistakes and not doing so? We got issues.

Well then, if everyone knows the appalling referees are the reason the game ended like that, why isn’t everyone calling for their heads? The answer is quite simple.

The referees don’t belong there. We know that, they know that, and the league knows that – but it’s not their fault they are there. That fault deserves to be placed on @nflcommish Roger Goodell – the man too stingy to give the deserving referees their well-deserved raises.

Back to the twitter blow up. Players get fined for a lot of things, but rarely do they seek the fines with the “I really don’t care anymore attitude.”

Here are tweets from a few, lets say… disgruntled, Green Bay players involved with last nights game:

@TJLang70 (TJ Lang, Packers Guard)

  • Any player/coach in Seattle that really thinks they won that game has zero integrity as a man and should be embarrassed.
  • F*** it NFL… Fine me and use the money to pay the regular refs

@GregJennings (Greg Jennings, Packers WR)

  • #NFL C’MON MAN!  Can’t even be upset anymore.  All I can do is laugh.  Laugh at the #NFL for allowing America’s game to come this.  WOW!

@jsitton71 (Josh Sitton, Packers Guard)

  • The nfl needs to come to gb and apologize to us for f******* us! These refs r bums!
  • Golden tate is full of s**** too. Saying he clearly caught that is embarrassing! F****** jokers!

All of these will probably receive fines, but the following seals the deal, ices the cake, and just down right makes me happy. Get ready, this is kind of crazy.

@ClayMatthews52 (Clay Matthews, Packers Linebacker)

  • Roger Goodell can be reached at 212-450-2027.  Feel free to share.

WHAT!?! Take a second to understand what Matthews just did. He just encouraged every enraged fan to call Roger Goodell on his personal line and voice their opinion.

The tweet was eventually taken down but not before it was ‘retweeted’ thousands of time, and can be found with ease.

What would you say if you called Goodell and had the opportunity to speak with him? I’ll leave you with what my voice mail might sound like.

“Hey there Roger, Jacob here. I’m not sure if you are aware of what happened last night but the replacement referees, yeah the same ones you have been saying have been doing a great job the past couple weeks, kind of dropped the ball, pun intended.

There is just no going back from this. You have told the fans and the teams for 12 years that it is their league, and you would do what is necessary to make it the best league possible.

(Awkward silence)

You see what I’m getting at?  You promised us a league and then went on to destroy it. Now, I can offer a unique viewpoint. Like you, I am a commissioner. Your league is the NFL and mine is the Livingston Fantasy Football League. So since I am qualified to do your job, and without a doubt could do it better, here are three easy steps to limit the amount you will be disliked for the remainder of you time in charge, and unfortunately probably your entire life.

First, fine the players the players that deserved to be fined. There must be a certain integrity to the game and although this may seem ironic because you single handedly destroyed this integrity, their actions must come with consequences – no matter how awesome they were.

Second, pay the refs.  It doesn’t matter how much at this point, just get it done. We all know the league makes a ridiculous profit every year and lets be honest, you won’t be here for very long so it shouldn’t make a difference to you.

Finally, it truly pains me to say this, but it’s time to go. Certain events in a man’s life happen and there is no going back, this is one of them. If you really need a job, I can give you my spot in the Fantasy league – there isn’t really anything you can mess up there.

Thanks for your time. Have a great day.”
